stories and histories BIRTH OF KING GEORGE II

BIRTH OF KING GEORGE II
George II reigned as king of Great Britain from 1727 until 1760, a period of tremendous growth and development, for both the British nation and empire.

George was the last British monarch not born in Britain.
He was born in the city of Hanover in Germany on 10th November 1683.

He spoke English with a heavy German accent.
He was also the last monarch to personally fight, in a battle, when at the age of 60, he fought alongside his soldiers, at the Battle of Dettingen in 1743 in Germany, against the French.

In 1705, George married the beautiful and intelligent Caroline of Ansbach.
It was love or at least lust at first sight.

I found that all I had heard about your charms did not nearly equal what I saw, George wrote to Caroline with uncharacteristic romantic flourish.

He would remain sexually in thrall to his voluptuous blonde wife, who was noted for her magnificent bosom, for nearly three decades.
They would go on to have nine children together, four sons and five daughters, sadly most of whom died young.

George's death was decidedly less regal, than his tenure as British king.

On the morning of 25th October he rose as usual at 6:00 am, drank a cup of hot chocolate, and went to his close stool alone.
After a few minutes, his valet heard a loud crash, and entered the room to find the king on the floor.

Straining to relieve constipation, George II fell off the toilet and smashed his head on a cabinet.
The king was lifted into his bed, and his daughter Princess Amelia was sent for.

Before she reached him, he was already dead.
At the age of nearly 77, he had lived longer than any of his English or British predecessors.

Rumours that The King died, while having a poo, were rife.
However, a post mortem revealed, that the king had died as the result of a thoracic aortic dissection.

On 11th November, he was interred at Westminster Abbey, in a large marble sarcophagus, with his coffin next to Caroline.
By his wish the sides of the coffins were removed so their dust could mingle after death.

No monument was erected and only small stones on the floor above the vault, mark their graves and those of the family.

He was the last monarch to be buried in the Abbey, as succeeding sovereigns would be buried at Windsor.
