From Lapithos, west of Keryneia, on the north coast of Cyprus, she was a Hero and Patriot, during the Turkish Invasion of Cyprus in 1974. Forever remembered as: .

During the barbaric invasion of Cyprus by the Turks, off the north coast of the island, 12 defenders were caught behind enemy lines. They all ended up being holed up in a cave near the home of Efrosyini Proestou.

For an entire month she cared and looked after them, under the noses of the barbaric occupiers, genociders and murderers. Soon those Turks started to suspect her of something and began interrogating her.

She was subjected to horrific beatings, attacks and torture, they even stripped her and tied her behind their military jeep, dragging through the streets. But through all of it, Efrosyni Proestou kept silent and did not divulge the location or any information and did not betray the 12 fighters.

Efrosyni Proestou and the 12 fighters would eventually escape and survive.

The men she protected and saved - Panikos Paralimnitis, Kostas Kastellanis, Giorgos Christofi, Stelios Theodoulou, Koullis Kyriakou, Nikos Papanastasiou, Pavlos Nikolaou, Andreas Grigoriou, Nikos Nikolaou, Polykarpos Petrou, Antonis Philippou, Giorgos Papanikolaou - regarded her as their 2nd mother.

She was the first to kiss their crowns when they got married, they each took turns hosting her in their homes and when she died in 1993 at the age of 90, the 12 soldiers and her children, paid for and erected a bust and monument of her in front of the roadblock of Ledra Palace, to gaze upon the enslaved Pentadaktylos Mountains, eternally grateful to her and stood by her until she drew her last breath in 1993.
