Greek mythology – other charactersGreek mythology – other characters :
Not only gods and heroes appeared in the myths.
Muses also played an important role and were the important part of the cultural life.
There were 9 of them, and they were daughters of Zeus and
Mnemosyne. Each muse looked after a specific field of poetry, art or science and had an assigned
attribute:
Calliope – epic poetry, philosophy, and rhetoric, presented with a tablet and a stylus
Clio – history, depicted with a
scroll of papyrus
Erato – love poetry, it was depicted with a Kitara
Euterpe – lyrical poetry, playing the flute, it was presented with an aulos
Melpomene – tragedy and singing, depicted with a tragic mask
Polyhymnia – muse of song, choral poetry, pantomime, she was always depicted deeply thoughtful, without attribute
Talia – comedy, it was portrayed with a comic mask
Terpsichore – dance, she was portrayed with a lyre and plectrum
Urania – astronomy and geometry, depicted with a compass and a sky ball (star globe)
All muses had the ability to prophesy and performed in the
retinue of Apollo, called the leader of the muses.
We cannot forget to mention here Demigods, who were born from the relationship of gods
with people (which proves the interpenetration of these two worlds), demigods with
extraordinary abilities. The mythology is full of them, and stories about their exceptional capabilities. I am only going to mention few of them here, the
most known.
Demigods:
Heracles
Son of Zeus and Alcmene. Known for his extraordinary strength, bravery, and outstanding archery
skills. His character can be found in the myth The Twelve Works of Heracles, in which he proved that
he has powers that are superior to man.
Theseus
Son of Poseidon and Aethra. An Athenian hero who also had to
prove his strength by performing works (as in the myth about
Heracles), the most famous of which is killing the Minotaur –
half human, half bull.
Achilles
Son of Peleus and Tethys. As an infant, he was submerged by his mother in the waters of the Styx
to immortalize him, but the heel she held him by became his weak point. Of course, this is where the Achilles’ heel has come from. He was burdened with the
prophecy of participation in the
Trojan War, and thus – imminent death in glory. Before Troy was
conquered by the Achaeans, Achilles, as a hero of this war,
had just been stabbed to the heel.
Hippolyta
daughter of Ares. She was he famous Queen of the Amazons.
The tribe of female warriors.
Helen of Sparta also known as Helen of Troy:
According to older sources, daughter of king Tyndareus and
Leda, but Homer also calls her daughter of Zeus and Leda. Wife
of Menelaus, the king of Sparta.
