stories and histories HISTORY OF PANSO PEOPLE

The Panso people are indigenous people of Sardauna Local Government Area of Taraba State. They live in mixed settlements with other tribes like the Fulani, Mambilla, Kaka, Kambu, amongst others.

PANSO CULTURE
The Panso People have a unique culture that can be described as a microcosm of most Nigerian cultures. The evolution of this unique culture emanated from their resilience in sustaining their culture and tradition as handed over to them by their ancestors from generation to generation. Their long time practice as itinerant traders, trading in Kolanuts, traditional clothes, salt, and pots also inspired them to either borrow or export this culture to other places. For instance, the Panso traditional attire is worn by the people of the grass field region of Western Cameroon, the Chambas and Jukuns in Southern Taraba State and the Chambas in Adamawa State as well.

Panso traditional dances like the popular Njang dance is a replica of the Oghene dance in the Igbo land of South Eastern part of Nigeria. The lyrics, the use of musical instruments like the cymbal (Ngem), Gong (Ngoo), musical flute (Kinsey) indicates Panso cultural interconnectivity with other Nigerian cultures. In a nutshell, the Panso culture, if well harnessed can be instrumental in boosting the Nigerian Tourism sector.

Apart from the numerous traditional dances, Panso artifacts, masquerades, embroideries, dances and craftworks are second to none in the country. In fact, the thrilling performance of the Minang musical troop during the National Festival remains a reference point in the history of the event.
It should also be noted that the longtime co-existence and interconnectivity with other tribes like the Fulbe, Huasa, Mambilla, Tiv and Chamba have influenced and given birth to a lot of linguistic similarities to the Panso Language. For example:
“Me” in Tiv language is “Mo”/ Panso Mo. “Trousers” in Mambilla is “sala” / Panso Sila.

ECONOMY/TRADE
The Panso people are known to be very intelligent, hardworking and highly industrious. Even though they belong to the minority as compared to other tribes, they dominate the business sector in Mambilla plateau. Most of them are involved in small and medium scale enterprises like furniture works, fashion designing, hotel / restaurant business, transportation, house construction etc and dominate the general trade between Nigeria and neigbouring Cameroon. No doubt, it is often said that if you want your business to succeed, hand it over to a Panso person and go to sleep.
Nigeria has a lot of unharnessed endowments and the Panso cultural heritage is one of the hidden and untapped treasures of the country. In essence, and in a time when the Federal Government is determined to diversify the Nigeria economy, the Panso cultural heritage, if well harnessed can boost the tourism sector of the country.
Long Live the Panso Nation
Long Live Sarduana LGA
Long Live Taraba state
Long Live the Federal Republic Of Nigeria.
