Culture IN IGBO LAND, GOOD MORNING IS NOT OUR THING

In Igbo Land, Good Morning Is Not Our Thing
prostrating on the floor to greet is not part of our culture

When I was serving in Awgu, Enugu State, I was the only Igbo corper in Awgu town. Because it was in Igbo Land, and I am Igbo, few of us - mainly married women - were posted to Enugu, and after the compulsory 3 weeks camping, most of them relocated to the Enugu city. I had the opportunity to meet people from different tribes. One day, something led to another and we delved into how we greet our elders.I listened to them and found it so strange that salutation demands a lot among other tribes.

My case was also strange to them. Whenever I returned to my house, and saw my father - I sincerely narrated - if I were sitting down, I would remain sitting. All the salutations I uttered were 'Osisioma', and Papa would respond: 'Ome Ka agu.' That's all.

It wasn't just between me and my father. My eldest uncle saw it as a complete greeting when I simply said 'Ofu Onye Adi Nma Ije'. Whenever I said that, he would respond in a long: 'hmmm' that was always filled with approval.

Osisioma and Ofu Onye Adi Nma Ije are not their real names, but adopted nicknames.

It wasn't in the nature of our ancestors to observe the age bound exchange of greetings. People did not wake in the ancient days to recite 'Good Morning'. In fact, the ancient Igbo man - and the present day lovers of Igbo Tradition - preferred hearing his title names to the sound of 'Good Morning.'

To set records clear, Ututu Oma - which the school system forced us to adopt as the morning greeting of the Igbo people - is alien to our forebears. Some years ago, most Igbo never knew of such a coinage. Those days, they woke in the morning, walked to our father and said: 'Ogbuefi, ana m ekene' or 'Okaa o mee, i ga adi' or 'Ikemba, ya gazielu gi'
(Ogbuefi, I greet you, or Okaa o mee, may you live or Ikemba it shall be well with you)

Ogbuefi, Oka O Mee and Ikemba are just title/ nicknames.

The original structured morning salutation of the Igbo is i sala/ i bola Chi?(meaning: have you broken (woken for) the day?). Unlike the English version, the greeting is mainly used by the elders - yes, questions are mainly from up to down.
Questions like 'Kedu' after a salutation is perceived rude/funny coming from the younger.

You see eeh, my children will wake every morning to say 'Nnaa, ana m ekene' or 'Nnaa, i ga adi'. No other greeting will gladden my heart more.

Whoever sees me and cheerfully says 'Ozii Baba' needs to add nothing else. I am an Igbo man, I am wired differently
