stories and histories THE BURIAL OF JANE SEYMOUR

THE BURIAL OF JANE SEYMOUR
Jane Seymour, third wife of King Henry VIII, went into confinement in September 1537.

At two o'clock in the morning of 12th October 1537, at Hampton Court Palace, Jane finally gave birth to Henry's coveted male heir.
The future King Edward VI.

Edward was christened on 15th October 1537, without his mother in attendance, as was the custom.

Both Jane and her baby survived, and her husband got the son he had longed for, everyone was happy!

On the day of her son's christening, she received visitors to her chambers.
Unfortunately, after the christening it became clear that something was seriously wrong with the king's third wife.......

Janes health had taken a turn, and she was experiencing what doctors called a lax.
The Queen was bleeding profusely, and doctors didnt know why.

All of a sudden the queen worsened, and her attendants warned the King that she was in great danger.
Henry, still high on the birth of his son, wasted no time in rushing to her beside.

As the Queen took her last breath, the Kings heart broke into a million pieces.

Jane passed away on 24th October 1537, at Hampton Court Palace.

Jane lay in state in the chapel royal at Hampton Court until 12th November, when her body was moved to Windsor for burial.

She was buried on 13th November 1537 in St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle.

Her stepdaughter Mary Tudor, the future Mary I, acted as chief mourner.

A procession of 29 mourners followed behind Mary, one for every year of Jane's life.

The ceremony at St. Georges Chapel saw the Queen laid to rest with full honors beneath the Quire of the Garter Chapel.

After the coffin was lowered, the Queens officers broke their staves over the grave, symbolizing the end of their service to her.

All the while the bells of London tolled for six hours.
She was the only one of Henry's wives to receive a queen's funeral.

After her death, Henry wore black for the next three months.
He married Anne of Cleves two years later.

When Henry died in 1547, he was buried beside Jane, on his request, in the grave he had made for her.

Their vault also contains an infant child of Queen Anne and the coffin of King Charles I, whose body was placed here after his execution in 1649.
