Culture THE IGBO CULTURE

When people hear culture, many things get into their head. They begin to imagine primitive things. Things offered to idols and other things.

Culture can be referred to as the ideas, customs, and social behaviour of a particular people or society. In the Social Studies subject back in primary school days, we were taught that "culture is people's ways of life."

The Igbo word for culture is omenaala. If loosely translated, omenaala means something that is done on the land. The land here refers to a place, people, tribe, nation, etc.

Now, you cannot talk about culture without identity. Culture is an identity of people. What people are known for.

Whenever you see an Igbo man you will know. When you see an Hausa man you will know. When you see Yoruba, Efik, Fulani, etc you will know. That thing that make you to recognize their identity is culture.

It could be language, intonation, dressing, food, etc.

Whenever you are talking about Igbo culture, you are referring to the Igbo identity. Igbo language is a culture. Igbo food is a culture. Igbo dressing is a culture. Igbo spirit of hardworking and resilience is a culture. Apprenticeship program of the Igbo is a culture.

When some uninformed people say: "Igbo culture is bad and primitive." I see a people devoid of sound reasonings. Ignorance in display. You are invariably saying that the Igbo food, Igbo Language, ideologies of the Igbo, identity of the Igbo, the mental state of the Igbo are bad and primitive. If there is a cultural practice you may want to criticise, it's advisable to point that out but not saying Igbo culture.

Igbo culture is an institution with different faculties and departments.

Culture which is omenaala shows one's identity.

How can something that shows your sense of self and identity be bad?

Igbo culture is ndị Igbo. Culture is an identity. Identity is culture. Igbo culture is beautiful. Omenaala Igbo amaka.
